School Walk UP Day

School Walk UP Day

In addition to National School Walk OUT Day yesterday to raise awareness and protest gun violence in schools, many schools across the nation sponsored National School Walk UP Day to promote kindness and empathy to other students.

It is always important to be kind to each other and to your teachers. You have no idea how a small act of kindness -- like saying hello to a teacher or another student you don't always talk to -- can make such a big difference in their day.

In honor of School Walk UP Day, I'd like to do a similar activity to promote kindness and empathy within our school community.

I challenge you to perform SEVENTEEN random acts of kindness in our school over the next two weeks.

Some suggestions:
- Invite a student who typically sits alone at lunch to sit with you and your group of friends.
- Smile and say hello to a student (or a teacher) that you do not know.
- Write a teacher a thank you note telling him or her you appreciate his/her work

Your SEVENTEEN acts of kindness should affect fourteen students/peers and three adults/teachers (remember, non-teacher faculty and staff members, like the cafeteria workers, custodians, secretaries, aides, etc. count as important adults in our building!) to honor the lives of the fourteen students and the three teachers/adults that lost their lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

While I believe that good deeds are rewarded by Karma, God, the Universe, and/or whatever deity you believe in, I would also like to honor anyone who completes this challenge with a special prize.

Please write down the good deeds you perform and the name of the student or teacher that is affected by your random act of kindness. Ask the teacher/adult to sign off on the act that your performed as well. Please be honest and do not abuse this by making things up that you don't actually do. Please give me your Random Acts of Kindness Sheet (please see Resources for a sheet that I created) on or before March 29th. I will pay a visit during the week after Spring Break to award prizes to anyone that completes 17 Random Acts of Kindness.
